چکیده

The most powerful geometric tools are those of differential geometry, but to apply such techniques to finitely generated groups seems hopeless at first glance since the natural metric on a finitely generated group is discrete. However Gromov recognized that a group can metrically resemble a manifold in such a way that geometric results about that manifold carry over to the group [18, 20]. This resemblance is formalized in the concept of a “quasi-isometry.” This paper contributes to an ongoing program to understand which groups are quasi-isometric to which simply connected, homogeneous, Riemannian manifolds [15, 18, 20] by proving that any group quasi-isometric to H × R is a finite extension of a cocompact lattice in Isom(H ×R) or Isom(S̃L(2,R)).

Rigidity of quasi-isometries for symmetric spaces and Euclidean buildings

for all x ∈ X . Quasi-isometries occur naturally in the study of the geometry of discrete groups since the length spaces on which a given finitely generated group acts cocompactly and properly discontinuously by isometries are quasi-isometric to one another [Gro]. Quasi-isometries also play a crucial role in Mostow’s proof of his rigidity theorem: the theorem is proved by showing that equivaria...

Coarse Equivalence and Topological Couplings of Locally Compact Groups

M. Gromov has shown that any two finitely generated groups Γ and Λ are quasi-isometric if and only if they admit a topological coupling, i.e., a commuting pair of proper continuous cocompact actions Γ y X x Λ on a locally compact Hausdorff space. This result is extended here to all (compactly generated) locally compact second-countable groups. In his seminal monograph on geometric group theory ...

Isometry Groups of Cat(0) Cube Complexes

Given a CAT(0) cube complex X, we show that if Aut(X) 6= Isom(X) then there exists a full subcomplex of X which decomposes as a product with R. As applications, we prove that ifX is δ-hyperbolic, cocompact and 1-ended, then Aut(X) = Isom(X) unless X is quasi-isometric to H, and extend the rank-rigidity result of Caprace–Sageev to any lattice Γ ≤ Isom(X).

We study the large scale geometry of mapping class groups MCG(S), using hyperbolicity properties of curve complexes. We show that any self quasi-isometry of MCG(S) (outside a few sporadic cases) is a bounded distance away from a left-multiplication, and as a consequence obtain quasi-isometric rigidity for MCG(S), namely that groups quasi-isometric to MCG(S) are virtually equal to it. (The latte...

Let G and G be simple Lie groups of equal real rank and real rank at least 2. Let Γ < G and Λ < G be non-uniform lattices. We prove a theorem that often implies that any quasi-isometric embedding of Γ into Λ is at bounded distance from a homomorphism. For example, any quasiisometric embedding of SL(n,Z) into SL(n,Z[i]) is at bounded distance from a homomorphism. We also include a discussion of ...
